Life on earth has evolved, been nurtured and is sustained by water. Sources of, and proximity to, clean, abundant water have spawned centres of human civilization over time and space. However, the present century is witnessing largescale water-related problems in terms of accessibility, adequacy quality and sustainability amongst different communities, never experienced before. Of these, water pollution due to geogenic and/or anthropogenic contaminants have emerged as the major cause of many diseases of epidemic or endemic proportions.
The impacts of water contaminants are more evident in the densely populated fluvial plains of the world, where surface water pollution has compelled greater reliance on ground water resources. The resultant excessive and unregulated withdrawal of ground water, not commensurate with the ground water recharge rates, has led to rapid alarming changes in the water’s physico-chemical parameters. Health impacts of arsenic, iron, fluoride, nitrate, microbes along with other potential emerging water pollutants in consumed water are posing major threats to community well-being and thence to holistic development.
This session invites research papers on emerging trends of fresh water contaminants, predictive analyses, sustainable alternate mitigation strategies, socio-economic factors and responses, and policies pertaining to water for human consumption.
